INTRODUCTION
There is a beautiful truth that many believers stop short of fully grasping. Most of us know to wake up, speak with the Lord, give Him the first moments of the day — and that is right. That is good. That is honourable.
But putting God first goes far deeper than a morning habit.
It is not something you do once and then forget. It is not something you say and then set aside. Putting God first is not just a moment — it is a mindset. It is not just a greeting — it is a guide. It is the difference between visiting His presence and inviting Him to reign over every part of your life.
THE MORNING IS THE GATEWAY — NOT THE WHOLE HOUSE
When you wake and turn your heart toward God, you are opening the door. You are acknowledging: “You are the first in my thoughts. You are the reason I rise.” That is precious. That is the foundation.
But imagine lighting a lamp in the hallway and then walking through the rest of the house in darkness. That is what many of us do. We meet Him at the door — then make our own decisions in the rooms beyond.
The morning time is the fuel — the decisions throughout the day are the road. You fill your spirit in the quiet — then you travel where He leads, not where your feelings or your fears would take you.
THE REAL TEST — DECISION MAKING
This is where putting God first truly lives — in the choices you make, moment by moment.
It is easy to say “I seek first the Kingdom” when you are singing it in worship. It is something entirely different to live it when:
You must choose between what you want and what He wants
The path He shows you is narrower, harder, or less popular
Everyone else is going one way — and His voice is gently guiding you another
Putting God first in decision making means:
❌ Putting Self First ✅ Putting God First
“What do I gain?” “What glorifies Him?”
“Does this feel right?” “Does this align with His Word?”
“I’ll decide — then ask Him to bless it” “I’ll seek Him first — then step where He leads”
“What will others think?” “What does He think?”
“I know better” “He knows better”
When you truly put Him first, you stop asking God to rubber-stamp your plans. You start asking to see His plan — so you can walk in it.
WHAT IT ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE — EVERY SINGLE DAY
Putting God first is not reserved for great, life-changing moments. It lives in the small, ordinary choices that make up your life:
- In relationships — you ask: “Will this draw me closer to Him?” not just “Do I like this person?”
- In finances — you ask: “How does He want me to steward this?” not just “What can I spend it on?”
- In words — you pause before you speak and ask: “Would Jesus say this?”
- In conflict — you choose forgiveness over being right, because that is His way
- In success — you measure it by His approval, not by what the world applauds
This is the depth of it: He is not consulted occasionally — He is consulted constantly. He is not an adviser on the side — He is the Head of the house.
THE WONDER OF THE CROSS — HE ALREADY MADE THE WAY
You do not have to carry this in your own strength. That is the good news of the Gospel.
- Through His DEATH — your will was crucified with Him. You no longer live to please only yourself.
- Through His BURIAL — your old selfish nature was laid to rest. The patterns that held you are broken.
- Through His RESURRECTION — His very life lives in you. His Spirit becomes your compass. You do not follow from the outside — you are led from within.
When you put Him first, you are not losing your freedom — you are finding your true direction. You are not giving up your life — you are handing it to the only One who knows how to make it beautiful.
THE PROMISE
Jesus did not say “Seek first the Kingdom — and struggle.” He said:
“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” — Matthew 6:33
When He is truly first — everything else falls into its right place. Not because you forced it — but because you are walking in His order. You do not need to figure everything out. You do not need to carry the weight of the future. He who holds the beginning also holds the end.
CONCLUSION
So let this be your new standard:
The morning is the beginning — but it is not the end.
Speak with Him when you rise — yes.
But then carry His presence into every choice.
When you do not know — ask.
When you are tempted — yield.
When you are unsure — wait.
Putting God first means: He gets the first thought, the first word, the first decision, and the final say — in everything.
And when you do that — you will find: the way becomes clearer, the load becomes lighter, and the journey becomes something you do not just survive — but truly live.

“Prayer in the morning without obedience in the day is like lighting a lamp then covering it. Let the light shine in your choices.” 🙏✨
