His Death: Payment for what we deserved
Romans 6:23 says, “The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” We deserved judgment and separation from God because of our sin. Yet Jesus, sinless Himself, took our place on the cross. He bore the penalty we owed, so that what we deserved fell on Him instead. Mercy means God does not give us the punishment we have earned.
His Burial: The end of the old life
When Jesus was laid in the tomb, it signified that the debt was fully paid. Romans 6:4 teaches, “We are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” Our failures, guilt, and past are buried with Him — the record is cleared completely.
His Resurrection: Proof that mercy is ours
If Christ only died, we would be forgiven but powerless. But He rose again on the third day, conquering sin and death. His resurrection confirms the Father accepted His sacrifice. It opens the way for us to receive what we could never earn: sonship, access to God, the Holy Spirit, and eternal life. Ephesians 2:8–9 reminds us: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Summary: Mercy is yours not because you fixed yourself, but because Jesus finished the work. He took your judgment so you could receive His mercy.
